Let’s turn the clock back, back to the late 1970s, and begin our journey of examining these little handheld marvels from there…

First up, we have the fabled Atari joystick. (okay, that’s not first up, but I’ve never actually seen a Pong controller system). The joystick is completely black, except for a red button. That’s right. Players had all of one button to choose from when playing their games (a recent archaeological expedition turned up one of these controllers amid the ruins of the Flintstones homestead). There’s no chance of pushing the wrong button with an Atari joystick.

In 1985, a couple years or so after the great video game crash, Nintendo successfully attempted to resurrect the industry when it unveiled its Nintendo Entertainment System. The controller that accompanied it had (count ‘em) four times as many buttons as its predecessor (A- button, B-button, Start button and Select button), plus, instead of a joystick, it boasted a cross-shaped control pad that continues to go strong to this day.

The Nintendo Wii remote was pretty groundbreaking for its time. Aside from the buttons, you can swing it this way and that to control your games, and even connect a Nunchuck or Classic Controller to it, depending on which game you’re playing.
